All Wildland Fire classes sponsored by Treasure Valley Community College meet or exceed federal course standards as outlined by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG).
TVCC is an active partner with local and regional federal and state agencies to provide training opportunities for current agency personnel, private fire contractors and individuals seeking employment as firefighters. Many of these courses have pre-requisite requirements in order to register. Space is limited and there are enrollment pre-registration deadlines.
Important Class Information:
All fire classes sponsored by TVCC meet or exceed federal National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards. Upon successful course completion, students will receive Certificates of Completion from Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon.
CBWCL Payment Policy: Purchase order, nomination form, or payment is due a minimum of 2 weeks before class date in order to hold your seat in class. We do not reserve spaces without pre-payment. In order to receive a refund student must fill out a drop form a minimum of 2 weeks before class. No Show students are not eligible for a refund.
Space is limited for all classes. To avoid course cancellation, REGISTER EARLY by filling out the Registration Form.
CANCELLATION / REFUND POLICY
TVCC reserves the right to cancel a class for which there is insufficient enrollment. If this should happen, we will either reschedule the class or provide a full refund of class and materials fee.
STUDENT REGISTRATION CANCELLATION / NO-SHOW POLICY
If you are unable to attend the course, you are responsible for filling out and submitting the DROP Form or contacting the Center for Business Workforce and Community Learning at least 24 hours in advance; otherwise the full amount of tuition will be charged to the student or agency. Failure to come to class (no-show) will also result in being charged the full amount.

Pre-Course Work Information
The pre-course work is based on a reading assignment that encourages you to examine how well prepared you are to lead others. The reading assignment is followed by a few questions that ask you to reflect on the reading in terms of your own situation. The intent of this reading assignment is two-fold. First, by reading this book as pre-course work you are afforded some time to think about the topic of leadership prior to attending the course. Second, reading in order to foster continuous learning is a key strategy for individuals who desire to improve their leadership skills throughout their career, no matter what type of business or endeavor they pursue.
Read the assigned book Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun by Wess Roberts, Warner Books, Inc., 1985. This book is less than 100 pages and is an enjoyable and quick read.
Write up brief responses to the following three questions regarding the reading assignment. The entire assignment should not require more than one or two pages.
- Question #1 â€“ After reading Chapter 1, identify which of Attila's 17 essential qualities are your strongest three and which are your weakest three. Briefly explain why.
- Question #2 â€“ After reading Chapter 2, briefly explain why you want to be a leader of firefighters.
- Question #3 â€“ Identify which chapter in the book (other than Chapters 1 and 2) you found to be most valuable to you as a future leader of firefighters and briefly explain why.
Bring your completed written responses with you to class.
As an alternative to the current pre-course work (Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun by Wess Roberts, Warner Books, Inc., 1985), the Leadership Committee approved the following:
Have students read Leading in the Wildland Fire Service, PMS 494-2, as the pre-course work prior to attending the course. Instructor should introduce and discuss the Professional Reading Program during the course. At the completion of the course have students complete the WFLDP Self Development Plan. This will give students the post-course assignment of choosing books from the Professional Reading Program library.
Bring your fireline gear with you to class (full Personal Protective Equipment, web gear, and boots).
Complete the What's Your Learning Style? questionnaire.
Answer the following essay questions:
- Explain the purpose of using a learning objective and describe the appropriate components of one.
- Discuss your individual experiences in teaching:
- What has your previous experience been as a facilitator or teacher?
- What methods have or have not worked for you and the audience?
- How would you improve these?
- Do you think your personal learning style (e.g. visual, auditory or kinesthetic) influenced your teaching?
- What are your expectations for this course (in helping you perform as a facilitative instructor)?
1. Read the S-212 Chainsaw Glossary of Terms to become familiar with terminology used in this course.
2. Review this Chainsaw Safety video which discusses recent events regarding refueling accidents. A short discussion about this will be discussed in class.
1. Complete the student profile form and submit to the course coordinator or lead
instructor prior to class.
2. Complete the pre-course work questionnaire. You will need to use the Incident Response Pocket Guide, PMS 461. Bring completed questionnaire to class.

You must obtain a score of 70% or higher to pass the pre-selection assessment in order to attend the course.

Pre-Course Work Instructions
1. Read the publication Leading in the Wildland Fire Service, PMS 494-2.
2. Go to the Wildland Fire Leadership Development Program website. At the bottom of the homepage, you will see the WFLDP Blog: "Wildland Fire Leadership" (also available directly at http://wildlandfireleadership.blogspot.com/. Click on Labels and read about a topic that interests you.
3. Complete the pre-selection assessment (pre-course quiz) and submit as directed by your instructor or course coordinator. You must obtain a score of 70% or higher to be admitted into the course.

Customized Contracted Training
The Workforce Training & Education Department (WTE), part of the CBWCL, provides customized training developed around the specific needs of employers. The WTE is flexible in providing training delivered on-site with participating companies or at TVCC facilities. Companies can acquire virtually any type of training through the WTE. Training time is based on the unique needs of the client. Examples of training include Wildland Fire, CPR/First Aid, OSHA safety and numerous other industry competency based curriculum. Courses are offered in English and Spanish. TVCC also offers an Associate of Applied Science in Wildland Fire Management for individuals interested in pursuing a career in wildland fire-fighting and management.
