President Young's July Argus Article
The Latest News from President Young
The warmer days of summer have officially arrived, bringing with them a renewed sense of energy and momentum at Treasure Valley Community College. Students eager to advance in their academic journeys returned last week to begin the 8-week summer quarter. This time of year offers a valuable opportunity for students to earn additional college credits, stay on track with their academic goals, and make the most of the months ahead.
Also last week, on June 26, we had the distinct honor of hosting a special graduation ceremony celebrating the accomplishments of students in the High School Equivalency Program (HEP) and the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). These programs are vital to supporting students from migrant and seasonal farmworker backgrounds, and it is always a highlight of the summer to recognize their achievements.
HEP is a federally funded initiative designed to help migrant and seasonal farmworkers—or their children—earn the equivalent of a high school diploma. It often serves as a critical first step toward higher education and career advancement.
CAMP, also federally funded, provides comprehensive support for students from similar backgrounds during their first year of college, helping ensure a strong foundation for long-term academic success.
Our HEP and CAMP programs are supported by a dedicated team of recruiters, advisors, and mentors who work collaboratively across departments. Together, they offer students a wide range of academic and personal support services, including academic advising, career development, job readiness training, and counseling.
The HEP and CAMP graduation ceremony is always a deeply moving experience. Hearing the personal stories of these hardworking students—their perseverance, determination, and dreams—is both humbling and inspiring. Many HEP graduates continue on to postsecondary education, and their success is a powerful reminder of what is possible when opportunity is paired with commitment. This cycle, we are proud to celebrate 28 graduates from the HEP program. It was truly a joy to honor their achievements alongside their families and supporters.
This week, I would also like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the TVCC men’s and women’s rodeo teams and Coach Drew Pearson for their outstanding performances at the College National Finals Rodeo held earlier this month in Casper, Wyoming. The women’s team placed 6th out of 35 teams, and the men’s team placed 18th out of 56. The caliber of student-athletes who come to TVCC from across the region to compete in our rodeo program is truly impressive.
Lastly, I’m excited to share that TVCC is nearing the release of a draft for our refreshed logo, created by Fisk Brand and Copy. The updated branding includes new typography, a modernized color palette, and other visual elements—but rest assured, our beloved Chukar mascot will remain. This rebranding effort has been months in the making and represents a bold step forward. I also hope you’ve noticed our new billboards and the many upgrades to our social media presence. Great things are happening at TVCC, and we’re excited to unveil a fresh new look that reflects our dynamic and growing community.
